| Naeba ski resort is located 30 minutes outside of Yuzawa town. This resort was once Japan’s crown jewel for its domestic market, and the nearby town shows the exact impact of the long since burst bubble. However the Prince Hotel sits immovable before the slopes, and provides a still bustling center at the base of the resort. It is here that you buy your lift passes, right next to the reception of the Prince, which explains the distinctive ‘Hotel’ vibe. There is also a bunch of restaurants contained within the main building, as well as a place to rent skis (though cheaper options can be found just outside the Hotel bounds). Once you make your way through to the base of the slopes themselves, you’ll find yourself presented with a myriad of lifts, all making their way up the wide and open face of Naeba. Advanced riders will make their way directly to either of the two Gondolas, as upper courses are naturally home to the colder conditions that cover the wide, steep runs in tasty powder. Beginners will be more than happy to stick to the significantly flatter bottom runs, and intermediate skiers and boarders can find some slightly more adventurous and challenging terrain between those two areas. With so much terrain, Naeba would itself presents a great chance to explore, and even veterans will find it hard to run out of new places to ski after a few days. For those that start to look for something new, they need do no more than make their way to the Dragondola, which connects Naeba with nearby Kagura Resort. This is where powder hounds will want to turn, as a higher number of advanced runs, and a very relaxed attitude on rope ducking makes it an ideal place to go hunting those fresh turns! |
